Monique (Scheck) Koerner ’95, ’19

I grew up in Hays and graduated from FHSU in 1995 with a bachelor’s in political science (emphasis in public administration) and in 2019 with a master’s in professional studies with an emphasis in public health administration.  My husband Lance and I have five children aged 25-15, with two still living at home. We have three dogs that keep us moving when the kids don't!

What do you now do for a living? How did you end up choosing this career path?

I am the new family and community wellness agent for K-State Extension and Research for the Cottonwood District. Previously, I worked as an early head start home visitor for Early Childhood Connections. I am also an International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) and La Leche League Leader. As a breastfeeding mother and eventually becoming a healthcare provider, I have always been interested in being healthy and helping others be healthy. My passion for mothers, babies, and families led me to this career path and to further my education in health and wellness.

Why did you choose to attend FHSU?

FHSU has always offered a great education at a reasonable cost. Since I am from Hays, I didn't consider going elsewhere because I wanted to support my hometown and the college here. I was very fortunate that FHSU offers a wide variety of degrees, and I found one that supported my interests and career path.

What are your favorite memories from your time as a student?

During my undergraduate years, my favorite memories are being a Tiger Deb! We marched with the band during football games and half-time at the basketball games. My favorite memory as a graduate student is writing a blog for one of my classes and being tagged on Facebook by my instructor for the article I wrote.

What advice do you have for current or prospective FHSU students?

My advice for FHSU students would be to work hard and persevere even when it's tough. Don't give up because one day, it will pay off. It may not be right away, but you will be better off completing your education in the long run.

Tell us about someone at FHSU who has left a lasting impression:

Dr. Jamie Schwandt and Dr. Helen Miles left lasting impressions on me during my graduate program. Their classes gave me the skills I need for my current Health and Wellness Extension agent job. They were both so knowledgeable and supportive. The activities and reading required in their courses prepared me to be a successful extension agent. As an undergraduate, I will never forget Dr. Don Slechta and Dr. Art Morin. They were my advisors and professors for many of my classes. Their wisdom and guidance were valuable as a young college student.

In what ways are you proud to be a Tiger?

FHSU is a great school that offers much for Northwest Kansas and the Hays area. I still find it exciting to go to football and basketball games today and root for the Tigers! As a kid, I remember going to watch the Tiger basketball team that won the NAIA championships. That was so exciting to watch those players as a weekend activity.
