Macey Pfeifer ’18

I was born and raised in Hays, KS, graduated through Hays High, then FHSU! In 2017, I graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Organizational Leadership. I love spending time with my niece and two nephews in my free time. We love riding Jeeps, getting Snoballs, playing video games and basketball, bike riding, board games, etc. I also enjoy spending time with friends and family. I recently got into Big Brothers Big Sisters and am a Big Sister! My little and I have had three hangouts so far! I love the opportunity to make a difference in a child’s life and spend time with them that they need!

What do you now do for a living? How did you end up choosing this career path?
About four months ago, I became the Executive Director at First Call for Help of Ellis County. I have enjoyed my time here so far, and the staff has welcomed me as their new leader! In the past, I have been involved in several volunteer opportunities and community events. When I saw the position opening, I knew it would be an excellent way to get involved and make a difference in the community.

Why did you choose to attend FHSU?
I chose to attend FHSU for two reasons: I already lived in Hays and wouldn’t need to move to attend school. At the time, I was at a job that I planned on having for a while and did up until March of 2023. The second reason was Fort Hays State’s affordable in-state tuition compared to other four-year universities in Kansas.

What are your favorite memories from your time as a student?
My favorite memories were attending the Back to School BBQ in the quad. This experience was neat because I met new people, played games, and won prizes. Another fond memory I have is my time in LDRS 310. In 2017, I created an event with my boss, Dancing Together for DSNWK. This local fundraising event between Styles Dance Centre and DSNWK allowed community members to participate in an activity they usually don’t get to. It is so special to see their faces light up with joy. This is an event that is still carried on annually in the community.

What advice do you have for current or prospective FHSU students?
I was a student both on-campus and online. I started on campus, but online classes made it much easier for me schedule wise while I worked. I would tell students there is always time, even if they think they do not have time to go to school. Online classes are much more flexible for people busy with work/kids/life. If you want to go to school or even back to school FHSU can make it happen!

Tell us about someone at FHSU who has left a lasting impression:
During my time at FHSU, John and Jenn Raacke left a big impression on me. I was a student worker for Jenn in the psychology department. John always left his students with a laugh, and Jenn always left hers with inspiration to be better and reach for bigger goals. They are now in Seattle, WA, and I stay in touch with them.

In what ways are you proud to be a Tiger?
I am proud to be a Tiger because of how they stay in touch. I am proud to be a Tiger because they have great community involvement. I am proud to be a Tiger because Fort Hays State makes it a goal for each student to be the best Tiger they can be. They encourage sports engagement, activity participation, and all around greatness from everyone who steps on campus.
