Kellen Adams ’07, ’11

A native of Hays, America, I attended HHS (Class of ’04) before enrolling at FHSU and completing my undergraduate and graduate work at FHSU. While I intended to major in Business/Accounting, I ultimately changed my major to Education, which has led to my current career path. I am a lifelong resident of Kansas.

What do you now do for a living? How did you end up choosing this career path?

I am beginning my first year as the Superintendent for USD 453-Leavenworth. I am currently in my 16th year in K-12 education. This career path “found me” after I was asked to serve as an Assistant Track Coach at Hays Middle School (named Felten at the time) and found out I enjoyed coaching and working with students enough that it prompted me to change my major. I have since decided to pursue additional leadership opportunities that have led to my current position. After teaching for five years, I entered the administrative side of the world, having served as a Principal, Asst. Superintendent, and now Superintendent.

Why did you choose to attend FHSU?

Growing up in Hays, I could see how much the University connected with the community and its impact on the City of Hays and Ellis County. Additionally, I was made aware of the quality of the programming and decided I wanted to be a part of that.

What are your favorite memories from your time as a student?

First and foremost were the quality instructors who knew me personally. I felt I received a quality education at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Secondary to this was time with friends and relationships still alive today.

What advice do you have for current or prospective FHSU students?

Research and do your homework. There are several options out there at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. However, there is also a reason why FHSU has had the success it has with its graduates.

Tell us about someone at FHSU who has left a lasting impression:

Dr. Jill Arensdorf was a professor in a Leadership course I took. I appreciated how well she knew students and her connection and passion for the content.

In what ways are you proud to be a Tiger?

This is a very solid university with a rich tradition of providing quality education to students at an affordable cost. I continue to be proud to boast that I am an FHSU alumnus.
