Harry Watts is the Director and Chief Foundations’ Development Officer of the Kansas Farm Bureau Foundation in Manhattan. Harry graduated from FHSU in 1976 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology.
What do you now do for a living? How did you end up choosing this career path?
Spent almost 30 years working for a telecommunication company and a statewide agriculture organization as a governmental relations executive. Currently, managing a Foundation for Kansas Farm Bureau.
Why did you choose to attend FHSU?
Grew up in Hays and my father was instrumental in providing many opportunities for me to experience Fort Hays. I also liked the fact that we had great interaction with faculty due to small classes.
What are your favorite memories from your time as a student?
I served on the search committee for a new University President. Was all school champions in men’s intramural basketball two years in a row. I also received a NSF undergraduate research grant for a biology project.
What advice do you have for current or prospective FHSU students?
Enjoy all four years of your academic experiences and take full advantage of all the volunteer opportunities and extracurricular activities during your time at this wonderful University.
Tell us about someone at FHSU who has left a lasting impression:
Dr. Gene Fleharty and Dr. Gary Hulett were my mentors while at school and have been good friends. All three of us have made a number of attempts to bring back the former biology graduate and undergraduate students during FHSU Homecoming.
In what ways are you proud to be a Tiger?
I continue my involvement with the University as a former Alumni Association Board Member and currently serve on the FHSU Foundation Board of Trustees. During my time on the Alumni Association we attempted to build a new building that would house the Alumni and Foundation staff – what a great joy to be able to attend events in the Robbins Center. It was a ten year effort to get the building built.
