Aneth Morales ’21

My appreciation for the western plains came in 2008 when I moved from my home country of Mexico. I spent the latter part of my childhood in Dodge City, later becoming a Dodge City Community College alumnus in 2019. My studies continued at FHSU, where I obtained a Bachelor of Science in Psychology with a minor in Spanish in 2021.

What do you now do for a living? How did you end up choosing this career path?

I entered my current profession seamlessly due to my early work with prospective students as a tour guide in the Office of Admissions at FHSU. Not long after graduation, I began serving students and families in an advising capacity with the K-State College Advising Corps (KSCAC). KSCAC is the largest college-access organization in the country committed to guiding high school students through post-secondary planning. The needs of my home community have taken me back to Dodge City Community College, where I currently serve as an academic and learning specialist. This career has challenged me to draw on the pillars of collaborative relationships and the importance of being a lifelong learner. I truly enjoy coming to work at a college campus and forming part of the development of many emerging leaders.

Why did you choose to attend FHSU?

Much of my time as a Tiger was spent sharing with others WHY they should be a Tiger. FHSU’s approach to visitors draws on true Western hospitality, which I experienced during my initial visit in 2018. FHSU embraces you as soon as you step onto the Quad in a personalized way. This quality left a lasting impression on me, and I transferred here! I stayed for many reasons, but the most resonating one was due to my professors, who were instrumental to my personal and educational advancement.

What are your favorite memories from your time as a student?

My favorite moments at FHSU include attending events such as basketball games, fitness classes, and club meetings and simply spending time in the Quad or the nearby walking trail. I also loved dining at various restaurants after a long day.

What advice do you have for current or prospective FHSU students?

Regardless of what institution or major you go with, be present in the experience and intentional with how you spend your time! Having so many things to do can be overwhelming at first, but stay true to what you like and consider new things.

Tell us about someone at FHSU who has left a lasting impression:

I have an entire roster of admirable people, but I’d like to highlight Dr. Carol Patrick. She is an excellent professor who intentionally treats her students as colleagues. Her approach to lectures redefined how I perceived learning, thus making me a more innovative and empathetic person. It was also great having her dog join us during the pandemic on Zoom!

In what ways are you proud to be a Tiger?

My studies at FHSU were complimented by a great community. When I reflect on being a Tiger, I know that it is a lasting effect, the effect of executing positive action in our communities (and beyond) while feeling equipped to do so.
