Emily Gerstner ’02

I am a 2002 FHSU graduate with a degree in Physical Education. I currently reside in Frisco, TX. I am a dog mom to Bailee (the cutest Boxadore ever) and Aunt Emmy to Collins, Keely, Jackson & Koby.

What do you now do for a living? How did you end up choosing this career path?

I recently started a new role as vice president of philanthropic partnerships & community outreach with Aimbridge Hospitality, a leading global hospitality company headquartered in Plano, TX. Before my current position, I was in non-profit management with leadership roles at the Greater Wichita YMCA and Tampa Metro YMCA and, most recently, with the American Heart Association as vice president of development for the Go Red for Women Campaign for the Dallas Division. Working for a non-profit was incredibly rewarding and offered me many opportunities to learn, from operations to building strong staff teams to fundraising and donor relations. These experiences allowed me to transition into a role in the corporate world focused on social impact and culture.

Why did you choose to attend FHSU?

I chose FHSU for many reasons. I was able to attend a top Kansas university close to home, with excellent student life and the opportunity to pursue my degree in classes that were just the right size for interactive learning.

What are your favorite memories from your time as a student?

I made the best friends at Fort Hays! We still talk about our fun times, whether attending sporting events, grabbing a burger at The Q, or cramming for exams together. I felt a sense of community everywhere I turned, and the community has so much Tiger Pride! I wouldn’t trade my time at FHSU for anything!

What advice do you have for current or prospective FHSU students?

Learn something from every opportunity you are given, whether good or bad. The earliest years of your career will impact who you are as a future leader. And ALWAYS be your authentic self!

Tell us about someone at FHSU who has left a lasting impression:

Dr. Zody was one of my professors in the HHP department, and I loved his classes. He pushed us to be stronger, outside-the-box thinkers. When I wasn’t 100% focused or performing where I should be, he always kept me accountable and let me know that I was capable of more. Social Media has allowed us to stay in touch and keep up with each other’s journeys, and I know I have made him proud!

In what ways are you proud to be a Tiger?

FHSU is one of the premier universities in Kansas. I learned so much in my time there, both in the classroom and as an individual. I was just a small-town girl from Great Bend, Kansas, in the HHP department, but my education and experiences through FHSU have inspired me to lead a life of servant leadership both in non-profit and now into the corporate world. #ForeverRoar
