Kayla (Schmidtberger) North ’10

I was born and raised in Victoria, KS. I moved to Hays while attending FHSU. I live with my husband Josh and our very spoiled dogs Harley and Naismith Graham. I love spending time and spoiling my nieces and nephews. I love baking especially pies!! Baking with my bestie is the most fun!!

What do you now do for a living? How did you end up choosing this career path?

I am a Kindergarten teacher at Holy Family Elementary School in Hays, KS. I have been a teacher for 12 years; 11 of which have been spent at HFE. I love teaching Kindergarten!! I am blessed to be able to teach my dream grade with my best friend. We have all sorts of fun with our students. I have always enjoyed helping children, so I became a teacher. My mom had a daycare, so I was around children from an early age. I also helped kids while I was in 4H.

Why did you choose to attend FHSU?

I chose to attend FHSU because it was close to home, it was affordable, it had a great Elementary Education program, and many of my friends also attended FHSU at the same time as me.

What are your favorite memories from your time as a student?

I was fortunate to have an on-campus job while attending FHSU. I worked at the front desk at Forsyth Library. I created many friendships during those years, and we made work fun!! My boss was also very fun and nice!!

What advice do you have for current or prospective FHSU students?

I would tell students to push yourself and put yourself out there. Go outside of your comfort zone and take chances. If there is a class you are interested in but not in your major, take it!!

Tell us about someone at FHSU who has left a lasting impression:

Dr. Beth Walizer!!! I learned SO much from her!!! I try to embody her in my teaching. I teach my students the “YIPPY SKIPPY” every single year. Dr. Walizer had so much passion and enthusiasm for teaching. When I think of my days at FHSU, I think of Dr. Walizer.

In what ways are you proud to be a Tiger?

I am proud to be a Tiger because FHSU is a great university and community. I gained ample knowledge about the field of Elementary Education. I am also proud to be a Tiger because my dad, husband, and a younger sister are also Tigers!!!
