Shane DeWald, ’01, transformed his lifelong passion for sports into a career spanning more than two decades in parks and recreation leadership. He now serves as executive director of the Blue Valley Recreation Commission in Overland Park, where he works to expand recreational and sports opportunities throughout the community.
Originally from the Otis-Bison area, DeWald came to Fort Hays State University to study business administration and physical education, while competing as a pole vaulter on the Tigers’ track and field team. His time on campus shaped his journey and drove his desire to help people find a path to be active, connected, and engaged. In reflecting on his experience, DeWald commented, “I was never a number while attending FHSU. I was very fortunate to have great teachers and mentors who knew me and truly wanted to help me succeed.”
During his years working in parks and recreation, he has partnered with others to build inclusive playgrounds, increase program participation and revenue, and improve recreational facilities and fields. His work reflects a consistent focus on building environments that support healthy, active lifestyles for all.
DeWald also serves on the Fort Hays State University Foundation Board of Trustees. His professional background and expertise complement the Foundation’s commitment to support the university’s mission and growth. “I am proud to be an FHSU Tiger, and I feel responsible to give back and stay connected,” he said.
He and his wife, Amber (Wasinger) DeWald, ’02, and their daughters, Hailyn and Hadley, enjoy visiting Hays and the campus. “Fort Hays State is a hidden gem for those that do not live close to Hays.”
